چکیده

Active interfaces that act as infomediaries between underlying systems and their human users offer a rich and comprehensive solution to the pervasive problem of (lack of) usability in computer-based work environments. However, they also pose a substantial technological challenge. The paper describes a novel work-centered active interface architecture, called the Workcentered Infomediary Layer (WIL). This architecture allows interfaces to actively identify and offer highly customized work support to the system user without employing any intent inference mechanism. Instead, WIL relies on its ability to build and maintain an internal representation of the work context, and to offer support to the user based on their common relationship to the underlying work situation.

On the Design of Adaptive Automation for Complex Systems

This article presents a constrained review of human factors issues relevant to adaptive automation (AA), including designing complex system interfaces to support AA, facilitating human–computer interaction and crew interactions in adaptive system operations, and considering workload associated with AA management in the design of human roles in adaptive systems. Unfortunately, these issues have ...

Supporting User-Centered Design of Adaptive User Interfaces Via Interface Models

Model-based development is an emerging technology for the design and specification of interfaces from declarative interface models. Key benefits of this technology are: (a) centralization of all knowledge and data for an interface design in a single representation: the interface model, (b) definition of a user-centered interface development software cycle, (c) architectural support for multiple...

On Personalizing the Catalogs of Web Portals

In this paper we propose a method for personalizing the catalogs of Web Portals. We propose SCSL, a declarative language for defining personal semantic channels over Web Portal catalogs. A semantic channel is actually a view of one or more Portal catalogs. SCSL offers powerful primitives for filtering and restructuring available thematic topics and classified resources. A user can connect to a ...

Leveraging Work-Centered Semantics in Human- Computer Applications*

Adaptive Work-Centered User Interface Technology (ACUITy) is an open-source framework and architecture for developing semanticallyenabled mixed initiative user interfaces. ACUITy begins to answer some of the challenges presented in the design of a Semantic Web Browser, which we believe should collaborate with the user to determine how to support his or her work by using services available to fi...
